Key West

Cayo Hueso” Key West where real estate titles date back to the Kings of Spain. It is one of America’s true architectural and botanical treasures The locals have restored old wooden homes and have adorned them with lush tropical trees and flowers. Conch houses with tin roofs and palm line streets along with gingerbread mansions will delight you. Some famous homes are Ernest Hemingway House and John Audubon House and the Little White House.

The island has a rich seafaring tradition that lives on at the renovated Historic Seaport district, known locally as the Key West Bight. Dozens of shrimp boats once called this harbor home.

In 1982 the island city split itself from the US and declared itself a micro nation to protest the roadblock imposed by US Border Patrol. Key West declared itself as the “Conch Republic”.  The act of independence is still celebrated annually in April with a weeklong festival.

Key West is 129 miles from Miami, 90 miles to Cuba.
